What is cinnamon tea?
Cinnamon has been used for centuries to flavor tea, and is often used alongside other spices in a variety of different teas. Cinnamon bark is harvested from the cinnamon tree, which curls into cinnamon sticks as it dries. There are two main types of cinnamon: Ceylon cinnamon, which is from Sri Lanka, and cassia cinnamon, which is the cinnamon most often used as a culinary spice.
Cinnamon can be added to teas in the form of whole sticks of cinnamon, or can be broken up into fragments or ground into a fine powder. Cinnamon provides a pungent sweet, savory flavor to many teas, and often works in concert with other herbs and spices, such as cloves and ginger, to flavor a wide variety of teas.
Cinnamon tea benefits
Cinnamon has a variety of impressive health benefits that make it a great addition to a healthy lifestyle.
1. High in antioxidants
Studies have shown that cinnamon bark is high in beneficial antioxidants. Antioxidants work to reduce harmful free radicals within the body and promote cellular health. They can also help to ward off certain types of cancers and other degenerative diseases.
2. Helps reduce inflammation
Cinnamon has been shown to help reduce inflammation and soothe pain. Whether you’re suffering from temporary inflammation due to injuries or exercise, or dealing with chronic inflammatory conditions like arthritis, a cup of cinnamon tea can have powerful anti-inflammatory effects.
3. Good for your heart
Cinnamon can help to treat cardiovascular diseases and reduce harmful cholesterol. A cup of cinnamon tea is a simple and easy way to help improve your heart health!
4. Contains antibacterial properties
Cinnamon contains unique antibacterial properties that can help to protect you against infection and keep you safe and healthy. This is due to the presence of cinnemaldehyde and eugenol, both of which have antibacterial effects.
5. Soothes period pain
Studies have shown that cinnamon can have a powerful effect when it comes to easing the symptoms associated with your period. Cinnamon helps to reduce period pain, nausea, and menstrual bleeding, and is a safe and effective treatment for painful periods.
6. Good for your brain
While research concerning cinnamon’s cognitive effects are still ongoing, preliminary studies suggest that cinnamon can help to enhance cognition and reduce cognitive impairment. Cinnamon may also be able to help improve your memory, and can even work to prevent degenerative cognitive conditions like Alzheimer’s.
7. Soothes sore throats
Cinnamon contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help to soothe a sore throat. If you’re feeling under the weather, a cup of cinnamon tea can help to make you feel a little bit better.
How to prepare cinnamon tea
Since cinnamon can be added to a variety of different tea blends, preparing cinnamon tea depends largely on what the base of your tea is. For black teas with cinnamon, we recommend using one teaspoon of tea for every six ounces of water in your pot or cup, heating water to a full boil, and infusing for approximately three to five minutes. For herbal teas with cinnamon, use one teaspoon of tea leaves for every six ounces of water, heat water to a full boil, and infuse for about four to six minutes or longer. No matter what kind of tea you’re preparing, we recommend doing so using a teapot, tea infuser, or tea filter. These brewing methods give the tea leaves enough room to expand as the tea steeps, resulting in a richer, more flavorful cup.
