Opera & Tea Pairings
The Santa Fe Opera's summer season is about to start, and we're celebrating by pairing the shows in their 2026 season with some of our teas!
Madame Butterly & Butterfly Blue Pea Flower Herbal Tea
About Madame Butterfly:
A Japanese girl sacrifices her heritage for the American dream when a naval officer chooses her for his bride. Her dream is crushed by betrayal when he traps her in the very cage she wishes to escape. She seizes her destiny, and the devastating outcome lingers long after the final note.
Lee Blakeley’s acclaimed production artfully blends realism and lyricism, and is revived this season by Melanie Bacaling in her mainstage directorial debut. Conductor John Fiore leads a powerful international cast. Karen Chia-ling Ho as Cio-Cio-San, Sun-Ly Pierce as Suzuki and Ya-Chung Huang as Goro make their company debuts. Renowned tenor Stephen Costello sings B.F. Pinkerton. Returning artists Jarrett Ott and Le Bu lend their voices to the clash of traditions as Sharpless and the Bonze, respectively.
Our pairing:
Sometimes called blue tea, butterfly pea flower tea is made from the leaves and flower petals of theclitoria ternateaplant. Butterfly pea flower is commonly grown in Southeast Asia, and brews up a brilliant blue color when prepared as a tea. It has a floral, mildly sweet flavor, somewhat similar to that of chamomile. A fan favorite due to its intense blue color, it can be added to other drinks and even cocktails for a boost of bright blue color!
The Magic Flute & Kenyan Purple Tea
About The Magic Flute:
Imagine a magic flute that can tame the wildest of beasts. Can Prince Tamino and Papageno use it to save the princess Pamina? They embark on a fantastical quest – and along the way, they encounter enchanting characters and face daring trials.
Directed by Christopher Luscombe in his company debut, this spectacular entertainment for all ages will feature the sumptuous look of Victorian pantomime with dazzling stage effects by Chris Fisher who created the illusions for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway. The cast includes Josh Lovell as Tamino, Joélle Harvey as Pamina, Jeni Houser as the Queen of the Night and Alexander Köpeczi as Sarastro, all company debuts.
Our pairing:
Purple tea is produced from the leaves of the camellia sinensisplant, which is the same plant from which black, green, oolong, and other types of tea are made. Unlike other types of tea, however, the leaves of this new varietal are purple instead of green. The tea was first discovered growing wild in the Assam region of India, and is now grown commercially in Kenya, Africa. Purple leaf tea has a similar flavor profile to oolong.
Eugene Onegin & Summer Romance Green & Black Tea
About Eugene Onegin:
With unbridled passion, devastating heartbreak and unspoken regret, Tatyana’s love is rejected by Onegin, who, a little too late, realizes his mistake. Don’t miss this unforgettable journey through longing, desire and the haunting question: What if?
This striking production, directed by Alessandro Talevi with sets and costumes by Gary McCann, gives full expression to the 19th century Russian literary classic by Alexander Pushkin, which inspired Tchaikovsky’s opera. Conducted by Keri-Lynn Wilson in her company debut, the production also features the company debuts of Olga Kulchynska as Tatyana, Mattia Olivieri as Onegin and Lindsay Ammann as Larina, as well as American debuts by Azerbaijani mezzo-soprano Elmina Hasan in the role of Olga and Peruvian tenor Iván Ayón-Rivas as Lensky.
Our pairing:
Let this magical blend carry you away like a summer of love. Sweet papaya, strawberry, black tea, and green tea come together in this sweet, fruity, intensely aromatic blend. Summer Romance also makes an excellent iced tea!
Rodelinda & Tuscan Sun Herbal Tea
About Rodelinda:
Queen Rodelinda navigates a dangerous political web to protect her throne and family while her love for her supposedly dead husband reignites in a dramatic clash of passion and ambition.
Royal alliances shift and transform in the shadowy “noir melodrama gangster” world of R.B. Schlather’s staging of this revered Handel opera. Music Director Harry Bicket leads this work, where characters spin power, lies and loyalties through exquisite music in a chiaroscuro world where agendas and identities are never entirely clear. The cast features exciting company debuts including Lucy Crowe as Rodelinda, Anthony Gregory as Grimoaldo and Hugh Cutting as Unulfo.
Our pairing:
This colorful blend of flowers, fruits, and herbs reminds us of a sunny meadow in Tuscany. Tuscan Sun blends apple, linden blossoms, lemon balm, lavender, rose petals, blackberry leaves, orange blossoms, and blue mallow blossoms for a light, floral, and soothing blend. Excellent hot or iced.
Lili Elba & Midnight Rose Black Tea
About Lili Elbe:
Lili’s journey — marked by love, loss and self-discovery — is the true story of a Danish painter who, with the steadfast support of her wife Gerda, became one of the first to undergo gender-affirmation surgery nearly a century ago.
Named “Best World Premiere” at the 2024 Oper! Awards, we are thrilled to present the American premiere of Tobias Picker and Aryeh Lev Stollman’s groundbreaking new opera. Former Apprentice Singer, baritone Lucia Lucas, makes her Santa Fe Opera debut as Lili Elbe, and returning soprano Sylvia D’Eramo sings the role of Gerda Wegener, Lili’s supportive wife who was also a celebrated artist. This production brings the artists’ milieux of 1920s-30s Paris and Copenhagen to life with direction by James Robinson, set design by Allen Moyer and costumes by Marco Piemontese.
Our pairing:
This rose black tea is a smooth tea with a medium body and floral notes. Midnight Rose features Chinese black tea with rose petals—a classic combo that results in an aromatic, flavorful cup with a sweet, floral character. This tea is delicious hot and also makes a refreshing iced tea.
