Organic Golden Yunnan Black Tea

Golden Yunnan is a bright, coppery, full-bodied tea from the famous Yunnan province of China. This tea brews into a soft, rounded cup with pleasant, slightly peppery notes, and is a wonderful example of a high-grade Chinese black tea with abundant golden tips. Like other Chinese black teas, it’s mild enough to enjoy on its own without any milk or sweetener.

This Golden Yunnan Black Tea is carefully blended and packaged by hand in a reusable tin or a resealable kraft bag. Our 3.5 oz. tin or kraft bag makes approximately 40 cups of tea. Our 7 oz. kraft bag makes approximately 80 cups.

How to Brew Golden Yunnan Tea

Use 1 level teaspoon per 6 oz. water. Heat water to boiling. Steep for 3 to 4 minutes.

We recommend preparing Golden Yunnan using a teapot, tea infuser, or tea filter. These brewing methods give the tea leaves enough room to expand as the tea steeps, resulting in a richer, more flavorful cup.

More About Golden Yunnan

Tea has a rich history in China stretching back centuries, and both myth and archeological research indicate that tea may have been consumed in China as far back as three thousand years ago. In China, what we often refer to as “black” teas are called reds teas, while aged, fermented teas like pu-erh are referred to as black teas or dark teas. Chinese teas tend to be slightly lighter and milder than other types of black tea, and are lovely when taken on their own with no need for milk or sugar.

Yunnan province is a region in southwestern China that is famous for its tea production, and is the source of many different kinds of teas, including Yunnan black tea and pu-erh. Yunnan province is located in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains, and also borders Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar. The mild climate and high elevation make it an ideal growing climate for tea. Yunnan province is sometimes considered the birthplace of tea, and the region contains some of the oldest wild tea plants in the country. The methods used to harvest and produce Yunnan black tea as a luxury loose leaf tea, rather than a black tea pressed into bricks or cakes, were developed in the 20th century.

Yunnan black tea is a premium tea renowned in China and beyond for its high-end character and sweet, mellow taste. The tea is set apart by the large number of golden-tipped leaves and buds present in the loose tea, which are an indication of superior quality. Like other Chinese black teas, Yunnan black tea is made from large tea leaves from the camellia sinensis var. sinensis varietal of the tea plant, and is fully oxidized before being prepared and packaged for consumption. Yunnan black tea is also often known by the Chinese name dianhong, or as Yunnan red tea.

Like many Chinese black teas, Golden Yunnan tea is lighter and mellower than the more robust Indian black teas, with a rich, malty flavor and a hint of natural sweetness. Yunnan black teas often have delicate, golden-tipped leaves, and brew up a bright, reddish color. We’ve named our Yunnan black tea Golden Yunnan in honor of these beautiful striking leaves!
